Little Pine State Park, three state forests host trail events
by Jim Hyland

On the weekend of August 15-16, the Little Pine State Park complex, as well as the Tiadaghton, Tioga, and Sproul state forests hosted two simultaneous trail running/hiking events covering over 115 miles of state forest and park hiking trails. Over 500 people from around the United States and Canada participated in some way or attended the event as a spectator.

Jaron Martin, 22, of Hookstown, Pa., was the top finisher in the marathon (29 miles) with a blistering time of 5:43. The top female in that event was Jaqueline Palmer, 27, of Newark, DE with a time of 6:08.

On the 100-mile course, Mike Wardian, 41, of Arlington VA, took home the axe award with a record time of 21:21. Kathy Cusick, 40, of Indian Harbour, FL, won her second consecutive top female axe award with a time of 24:57. The oldest finisher was Gary Dudney, 62, of Salinas, CA with a time of 35:54.

148 of about 200 entrants finished the marathon, while 57 out of about 160 finished the 100-miler.

Beginning in April, scores of volunteers worked with DCNR recreation foresters to prepare the West Rim, Tiadaghton, Mid-State, and Black Forest Trails used in the event.
