Enhance Penn’s Woods initiative results in 1,700-acre addition to Buchanan State Forest
DCNR Secretary Ellen Ferretti has announced that the department will add more than 1,700 acres to Buchanan State Forest with the acquisition of the Hardwoods Trail tract in Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County.
This project is part of Enhance Penn’s Woods—a two-year, more than $200 million initiative launched by Governor Tom Corbett to repair and improve Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests.
“Hardwood Trails connects two previously disparate parcels of state forest land, providing connectivity of important ridge habitat that promotes enhanced recreational opportunities, improved public access and the conservation of important ecological features,” DCNR Secretary Ellen Ferretti said. Pa. Fish and Boat Commission grants to fund Sinnemahoning projects
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has announced $500,000 in grants to develop and implement projects that benefit fishing, boating, and aquatic resources within in Cameron, Elk, Potter and McKean counties. The funding is available through a 2007 settlement agreement with Norfolk Southern as restitution for environmental damages from a June 30, 2006, train derailment in rural Norwich Township, McKean County.
The grants include $58,000 for the Miller Run Access and Viewing Area—DCNR will provide a new public access along the Bennett Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek in Cameron County, information kiosk, and parking. Boating access will include a trail to the water and launch ramp for canoes and kayaks.
