Elk Country Visitor Center honored for energy conservation achievement
Pennsylvania's widely acclaimed Elk Country Visitor Center has earned independent honors for energy efficiency and environmental design, DCNR Secretary Richard Allan announced last week.
"We are proud to learn yet another major DCNR Pennsylvania Wilds project has been awarded Gold LEED status by the U.S. Green Building Council,” Allan said. “Similar recognition recently was extended to the new Nature Inn at Bald Eagle in Centre County and the Tiadaghton State Forest Resource Management Center in Lycoming County."
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally recognized mark of design, construction and maintenance excellence that seeks to ensure buildings reflect the highest environmental and energy efficiency. Read more...

State parks mark new year with ‘First Day Hikes’ across Pennsylvania
Helping visitors ring in 2012 with healthy exercise and a glimpse of nature’s winter beauty, the Bureau of State Parks sponsored free, guided hikes in 13 state parks on New Year’s Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes initiative in all 50 states.
Organized by the National Association of State Park Directors, the nationwide, New Year’s Day hikes originated more than 20 years ago in Milton, Mass. The program was launched to promote both healthy lifestyles throughout the year and year-round recreation at state parks. State involvement has to grown to the point where, for the first time in 2012, all 50 state park systems have joined together to sponsor First Day Hikes.
Pennsylvania State Park staff and volunteers lead the hikes, which were about one or two miles. For more information, visit www.americasstateparks.org.

Bendigo Snow Festival at Bendigo State Park
