The Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee fulfills the federal requirements for the Pennsylvania Recreational Trails Program. The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP 21) reauthorized the Recreational Trails Program through fiscal year 2014 as a set-aside from the Transportation Alternatives Program. This program provides funds to states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trails uses.

The 20-member, DCNR appointed Committee is charged with helping to implement the trail recommendations of the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan. Members represent trail users, trail builders, trail advocates and persons with disabilities.

The Committee's main responsibilities include advising DCNR on the use of trail funding in Pennsylvania, reviewing and ranking trail project applications, and presenting an annual trails report to the DCNR Secretary. Members must participate in 4 meetings per year in various parts of the state and participate in sub-committee work. For more information, see the Committee's bylaws.
